My sister always mentioned about this restaurant , quoting that it's the best western food offering in Kulim ...hmmmmmm sounds interesting. Personally I'm a big fan of a good medium done steak and hearing about a good eating spot like this interest me a lot ..

So during our last balik kampung trip I bring the whole troop to Chef Det. It's located in Kilang Lama (rumah Iffil Mia ) and you can see the sign from the main road. I've ordered the best steak in the Menu ....Cheese Steak ..medium done others ordered lamb chop, chicken chop and others.

After 15 minutes the menu delivered, hmmmmm not sure what is the problem but the steak was really bad .....I might probably go back but not for the steak

Abang Zaini was my one and only room mate during UUM days. I'm not sure why but for 4 years we've been in the same room 5d 204 (Kolej EON) without having to move to another room or colleges.

Both of us graduated in 1997 and since then I've never had the chance to meet him again. I know that he's into teaching and once was posted to Sabah. During the last school break I've tried to look for him (in FB) and alhamdulillah we're connected again.

He's currently based in Kulim and his house is about 10 minutes drive from my parent's house. After almost 15 years finally the 5D 204 members are back together. And I've made a promise to him to visit him every time I'm back to Kulim.

If somebody ask me the best zoo that I've been, my answer probably Vancouver Zoo (I was there back in the 90s) but if the question is about zoo in Malaysia, my answer will be Taiping Zoo.

The size is just right, not too big and not too small. This permits visitors to walk without depending too much on the tramp. I really like the collection the animals in Taiping Zoo, especially the exotic collections.

Another plus point about the zoo is the R&R area in the middle of the zoo itself. It give the chance for visitor to take a short break before continuing their walk. The zoo has been Taiping landmark for quiet a while and I believe it will stay like that for more year to comes.

We went there during the last school break. It's part of our Taiping town trip. This is not my first time but only during this visit I was made to know that this museum is the first in the country. Most of the exhibition is about history of Perak.

I really like the information about Orang Asli and Perak has a lot of history related to Orang Asli. The Labu Sayong information is really interesting. History about Perak warrior like Megat Terawih is also displayed. There's also replica of the remaining bones from the Elephant that hit a train in 1894 (rumors said that the elephant was revenging the killing of her baby).

Another interesting fact about the museum is the location just next to Taiping Prison , so it's very unique seeing prisoner being taken out from the prison wearing the orange uniform probably going to the court and of course being escorted.

Another school break trip. This time it's 50 km drive to Pantai Morib. Not far from Banting town. The beach was not a typical beach where you can don you swim wear and invade the sea but more like a picnic site where you can organize a nice makan-makan session.

That's what we've done. It's Widad Hanani's birthday and we decided to have it in Morib. Infrastructure wise is fantastic, the facilities is really good especially the public toilet and the weather on that day was perfect for a picnic session.

Everybody had a lot of fun, the nasi lemak and orange walnut cake by cik faiz (www.rawiwa.blogspot.com) was fantastic. A memorable outing indeed.

SCHOOL BREAK 2011 (CAMERON HIGHLANDS)

It's like almost every year we'll be making vacation trip to the highlands. Only the difference this time it's not going to be on the bus but in our trusted MPV no 2 (mr exora). I've decided to use simpang pulai route instead of Tapah since it's more comfortable.

The trip going up was so far the best in terms of comfort , much better from Tapah route. Our first stop was at Tanah Rata , stopping by at 8 mentigi rest house looking for rooms (although initial plan was just a day trip). It's school holidays and it's Saturday as expected no rooms were available.

Our next stop was the Mardi Research Center. This is a must for every CH trip that we've done. The strawberries were among the best. After about an hour at the center we went back to Tanah Rata looking for makan place. After lunch it's time for Brinchang looking for fresh vegetables.

Our last stop was at Cameron Valley center to experience the fresh tea complete with fantastic scones (English style). We then headed to Ipoh where the journey continues with makan at TKK and some shopping at Gerbang Malam.

This BBQ session was suggested by Mizan Masram (AGM at Bank Islam) during our last teh tarik session few months back. So last Sunday we manage to gather 15 boys from batch 8690. This is one of the biggest gathering so far and we really had fun.

We even had Hairil Alfian who just came back from working assignment in Sudan. Kamil Arshad a senior engineer with Petronas was also there (Last time we've seen him was ages ago ...) . Anyway we've agreed to have this session probably once every 3 months, the next session will be at Amir Syarizal's crib and hopefully the crowd will be bigger.

Thanks to Mizan and his family. NusaPutra is indeed a very exclusive housing area.

SHAH ALAM LIBRARY

This is one of my favorite library. The old setup was next to the State Museum which is really comfortable and well manage .I’m not sure why but the state government decided to shift the library to Section 13 which is inside the KGSAAS (the golf club) and yes you have to go into the golf club to get to the library (which for ne probably the first that I heard of) ….not only you get to go to one of the best library in this country but also getting the feel of going to golf club.

The new setup is fantastic …it defines the word MODERNIZATION perfectly. Not like the normal library that we used to go. Internet station is everywhere and wifi (very good wifi) is available. No more traditional stairs, they upgraded to escalator !!! Infrastructure is brand new, some of the sofa is fit for a 5 star hotel lobby.

However they could improve on the book collection (they can go the BBW and bought tons of cheap new books). The idea of not to permit visitors to wear shoes when entering the reading area is fantastic but they could improve on the implementation. I was told they have a 6-D movie but I haven’t had the chance to try it (the queue will be very looongggg).

Anyway it’s a fantastic facilities and not to take advantage of it will be a big waste (effort and money)

PUNCAK MUTIARA CAFÉ @ KULIM

A few months back during Ramadhan I had the opportunity to ‘makan’ at Puncak Mutiara Café located not far from Kulim. This place was suggested by many from the internet and the also from the rave review from a good friend of mine (Iffil Mia).

The access road was a bit small probably since the restaurant was part of plantation area. Parking was ample and since the booking that we’ve was early we manage to get one of the best seating. Hmmm what is so special about this place …

I would say the surrounding…. very peace, cozy and cool, that explain why the owner decided to set it up far from the main road. ‘Back to Kampung’ was the theme of this eating port. The owner also setup few gazebos for customer and it’s the best seats in the house especially the one near to the fish pond.

Makan wise , excellent especially my favorites ‘Pisang Keju’ …friend banana with chesse ..yummyyyyy. The Nasi bariani kambing was really good and also the vege dishes which made from mushrooms. The total price was moderate , which is not too expensive. I rate this place 8 out of 10.

No wonder this place was highly recommended by many ….

LIBRARY @ MERU

It’s a good practice to visit the public library. The nearest to our house is a small district library in Meru. Is actually in the same compound of the Meru Public Hall and Gym Rakyat. Good job by the State government trying their very best to establish public library even to rural area like Meru.

What can be improved is the reading area …at the moment it’s very small and will be a big problem if they have big crowd especially during school holidays. Reading material should be added especially English books …Overall it’s still a good library and what is more important Rahimi and Widad really looking forward for a visit to the library.

I’m a fan of nasi bariani. Although most people will refer to Muar or Batu Pahat as theeee place for the delicacy but the best basriani I’ve had is at Pak Anjang in Section 13 Shah Alam. JM Bariani ??? Well it has probably the most oulet and the francais management is the best ..it’s like the McDonald of Nasi Bariani but I’ve never had the opportunity to test it …

One fine day …Cik faiz decided to go for it (go for makan) and she decided to bring us along (minus wafi …). The setup is very nice …very comfortable… service wise not bad …although my mee bandung was a bit late. The nasi bariani was OKla …(it’s not out of this world type ..) …the mee rebus was also OKla too…(mee jawa much better) but the hero of the day was the bandung soda …no wonder people was talking about it as the signature entity …I’m not sure how they do it (it’s just a simple bandung with soda added) but probably because the perfect balance the bandung soda drink was PERFECT …

Last but not least ..the BILL ..(the damage) …..very expensive …..Pak Anjang is much better …

A VERY BLUEBERRY CHEZZY CHESEE CAKE

It’s cake baking mood again at our crib’s. Cik faiz has finally mastered the art of cheese cake making. Surprisingly it’s not that difficult ( from a spectator point of view ..) There are 2 version the baked and the ‘tak payah’ baked …which is directly put into the fridge and after few hours of chilling process it’s ready to serve.

This is one of our favorites , the combination of cheese and blueberry is probably one of the best combination ever …better than the rooney and berbatov combo …J. Serve it with home- made lemonade juice and best while watching Astro Masterchef Malaysia (go izani !!!) together with cik faiz and the trio …PRICELESS …

12 FANTASTIC YEARS ....

I'm a person who believe in family unity. And personally going out for 'makan' is one of best way to improve it. Breakfast is always a good time to go out and have a good 'makan' session with the family. Our favourite breakfast spot is a simple eatery stall not far from our house in Jalan Surau Sebaya.

Their speciality is traditional Javanese food including Lontong, Tempe and others. It's a simple setup with a kampung surrounding just like any 'kampung' scene in the local tv drama. The owner is really generous when it comes to the food serving. A budget as low as RM 15 could feed the whole family.

I've told friends who're staying around puncak alam , saujana utama and setia alam about this place especially if they're looking for a cheap and good makan place which a kampung feel.

Thanks to the emergence of food blogging sharing their secret recipe on daily basis, my wife has been doing lots of 'trial and error' cooking following the printed recipes. Last week it was the caramel rainbow cake ...this week it's the chicken pie !!!

The best thing about these recipes is the simplicity ...something that can be done by using what you have in your kitchen. In our case utilizing the 'veteran' oven. The steps was not that difficult, we even had WAFI to help us ....

The chicken pie was really good (bukan nak bodek ni ) and not sure what will be the menu this week but we're hoping that the house Masterchef will go for something Mediterranean ..;)

I've been planning this for the past few months especially on topping up my books fund ( the $$$$ la). Due to some negative experience during the last BBW (that was 2009 ..I miss the 2010 :( ) ...I've decided to go during week day to avoid the massive crowd.

Going there is not really a big problem since it's the same direction going to my good friend house (mr Azhar Omar) and also because the organizer has done a very good job in putting up the direction banner along the way.

I was there around 11 am and since this is my first visit to MAEPS ...I'm impressed with the facilities. Parking is a breeze and the organizer also has prepared a feeder bus to assist visitors to the exhibition hall ....the distance is not very far but coming back with loads of books might be a big problem without using the feeder bus.

Pergggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ....was my first reaction ...this is much bigger than I expected. The crowd was not as big as the weekend crowd. The books ..alamak !!! massive numbers ...the organizer did a good job in grouping it based on the genre or group of interest. My plan was to concentrate on biography especially adding up my baseball (yankees) collection.

Probably this is my day because in the sport section 70% is about baseball and most of the books is about yankees player (ada la jugak a bit of red sox) ...and since this sport is not really popular here ..this section in MINE ...:)

After 2 hours ....with the damage of RM 250 ...I'm back to my car with additional 40 books ...Thanks BBW ...this is by far the best ...BBW 2012 ..I'm expecting no less than this ..pleaseeee ...

KEDAI MAKAN PUAN HALUS

Hmmmm , what a very interesting name and it's nothing to do with the Makhluk Halus. This wonderful kedai makan was located not far from Army Museum in Port Dickson. If you're from KL and using the PD highway you should notice the signboard on the right.

During my time working with Exxonmobil I've few projects that requires me to drive down to he PD Refinery, sometimes even 3 times a week and I remember coming across the kedai makan sign board . Although Puan Halus name do catch my attention but due to working commitment I've no reasons to stop by.

So when we were in Port Dickson few weeks back for family vacations , I took the opportunity to make sure that I stop by at Kedai makan Puan Halus to have breakfast. and it was wonderfullllll ....

BIG BAD WOLF 2011: A MUST GO BOOK SALE

We've few good book sales event in this country. Payless Book Warehouse, MPH , Times Book Sales and few others. However my all time favourites will be BBW (Big Bad Wolf) Book Sale and for 2011 they will have the biggest sales ever. I was told the numbers of books to be cleared are estimated at 1.5 millions ...

My personal target for this year will be 30 books ....although my inner voice do recommend 50 (hmmm it will certainly depends on my budget on that day itself). I'm hoping to come across biography probably of some yankees player Derek Jeter, Mariano, A Rod and others

So friends the durations of the event is 1 week plus , so please plan your trip well. My personal advise is try your best to avoid going there during weekend unless your addicted to massive crowd ....

Thanks to CA for organizing (and also masakla ...) the gathering. The food was awesome ...still remember the cheese cake. The tapai was also fantastic (i'm not really a tapai lover ..but i like it).

It's not easy to organize such event and in this case the cooking was 100% done by the 'tuan rumah' ....I was told later that CA was not feeling well on that day ...I can imagine doing the dishes while not in the best self condition and for that we SALUTE you ...

p/s : due to some unforeseen technical reason the organizer was no in the photos (my mistake ...)

SANI EXPRESS : A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE

The big double decker bus in red colour has been an icon to the express bus industry. Whenever you see Sani Ekspress you know that the're providing the best of express bus services at a very competitive prices.

I was fortunate to experience it just before this year hari raya and the trip from pulau pinang to klang was the first time the company will be trying out their audio/video system. It was fantastic ..it's like experiencing personal entertainment system inside a bus.

I'm confident with the introduction of such system this company will definitely be among the top choices of bus commuter and others will have to upgrade the services to compete ...

I've heard about this name before but only during my trip to Army Museum , Port Dickson I manage to meet him (gambar je la since he's RIP already). General Yamashita was the Japanese Army General during the invasion of Tanah Melayu (he's the ketua penjajah).

What I'm impressed is the fact that Yamashita-san lead the Japanese army of about 67,000 to defeat the British Army of 120,000 , that is nearly double the number and that is definitely amazing. No wonder some people regard him as HARIMAU MALAYA ....

A GOOD RUGBY TACKLE

Tackling is one of the most important weapon in the game of gentlemen. It's used to stop opponents from running the ball to the score line. A good tackle will need to have the right momentum plus the accurate positioning before going for the finishing (which is the tackle of course)

HARI RAYA 2011

This year is a bit special because my mom was here to celebrate Hari Raya (instead of us going back to Kulim). My youngest brother was to register at UTM on the same week of Hari Raya so going back to Kulim was not a good option.

It's a very RED raya for us. Though it's not the first time we choose red as the color of our baju, it's definitely the REDDEST of them all (ada ke word ni ???). I noticed that during the hari raya prayer when our RED baju raya was really noticeable ..:)

Preparation was moderate. We manage to change the curtains , not enough time to do the kuih raya so it's only the kuih 'tunjuk menunjuk'. The Open House has to be postponed to next year due to technical issues (no bajet la ...). Anyway Hari Raya is still Hari Raya ...

ASAS IFTAR 2011 @ SAS PUTRAJAYA

I’ve been attending ASAS’s IFTAR regularly since 2007. It’s an opportunity to meet old Alam Shah friends and also mingle around with super seniors (juniors included). This year is a bit special because I brought along my family to the occasions.

2011 ASAS IFTAR was held at SAS Putrajaya and it’s my first time having meal (iftar) at the dining hall which is far bigger and better than the old setup in Cheras. Around 100 ‘SASSIANS’ turn up including the Tan Sri(s) and Datuk (s). At least involving my kids in this type of event could boost their motivation to study hard because it’s not easy to enter this type of school and if they’re accepted they will get better facilities compare to the others.

Looking forward to 2012 event.

THE BEST MACARON IN TOWN

I’m not really sure about the origin of this goodies called MACARON, but what I’m sure is that it’s been the talk of the town .My guest probably because of the colors (striking and lively). One might mistakenly confused either this thing is a food or a toy.

There’s this small food setup in Gallery , Subang Jaya called ‘WHISK’ where most of the food blogger quoted it to be the best macaroon maker. Subang Jaya is about 30 minutes from my house and finding Galleria (one of the newest shopping spot) is not that difficult.

WHISK is located on the food level , if I’m not mistaken ground floor. The setup is not very big, probably because most customers is take way customers. Macaroon was the main attraction and you can see it clearly with the colourful presentation. A piece will cost you RM 2 and RM 18 for 10 pieces. CHARITY @ RUMAH RAUDHAH

Doing charity works is a noble task. If you’re not a frequent charity volunteers at least once in your god given life you should try it. I think it’s more about the results from your contributions and having fun in doing that is a bonus.

I’ve given my students (in one of their subject) a task to organize charity works. They’ve decided to ‘clean-up’ one charity shelter called Rumah Raudhah in Gombak. It’s self funded shelter for orphanage, single mom and others. It’s amazing to see my students working their heart out trying their best to make thing better.

At least while doing the charity task, they can observe the situation in Rumah Raudhah and at least to realized how lucky they are compare to their friends in this shelter house. Personally I think somebody (with connections probably) should try to seek some helps from the relevant authorities to help this establishment especially in terms of infrastructure.

Anyway we had fun and feeling really good after the task was completed.

PALESTINE IN OUR HEART CONCERT 2011

Once a year , my college will organize an Islamic concert to remember the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Palestine and also to collect donations. This year the organizers decided to go big with the participations by some of the biggest name in this country nasyeed industry.

This year we’ve nasyeed group like Brothers, Mirwana and Rabbani performing live. And for me this is an opportunity to shoot photos and it’s a close up shot. The response was fantastic , tickets I was told were sold out. Am not really sure about the collection but I believe the number is big.

Looking forward for next year concert . Hoping that it will be much bigger ..Maher Zain maybe …

NASI AYAM RM 2.50 !!!!! (I'M NOT KIDDING)

Chicken rice , well everybody will agree with me if I say that this has been one of the most established ‘makan’ item in this country. I’m not really sure of the origin (that’s why we have search engine ...), but what I’m definitely sure is it’s goooddddddd.

Now, not for from my house ( 5 mins drive) there a small ‘village’ stall with a magic banner …”NASI AYAM RM 2.50 “ …a RM 2.50 chicken rice (complete set). Now if you’re thinking that something is not right with the printing, you’re wrong. It’s RM 2.50. That is one of the cheapest (this is 2011 !!!) where the average pricing probably is RM 5.00

Taste wise …not bad at all, the serving is just nice and the chicken was really good. This has been one of my family’ makan’ place since with a budget of RM 15 you can feed the whole family

USTAZ HASSAN THE IMAM MUDA 2011

IMAM MUDA…..is one of the reality show (similar to Akademi Fantasia) shown on Astro Oasis. This year it’s the second season and it’s more interesting since my office colleague Ustaz Hassan was one of the participant. So every Friday at 9 pm me and my family will be in front of the TV supporting Hassan.

Ustaz Hassan , after 9 weeks (if I’m not mistaken), was declared the winner. I’m not surprise because this individual has all the qualities in being a great Imam and in this case Imam Muda. Hassan will be very busy especially this year with Astro related event. However Ustaz Hassan do visit us at the office and as usual not to miss the opportunity I managed to ‘kidnapped’ Hassan for a quick ‘I want to have a picture with you’ session before Hassan went off.

BON ODORI 2011 (MALAYSIA)

Bon Odori is a Japanese related festival that is celebrated world wide. It has been organized yearly in Malaysia for the past 30 plus years. I’ve been planning to attend few years back but to no success. So this year I’ve jot down the event in my diary to ensure it will not be missed.
It’s an exposure to other countries culture that I want my kids to experience. We’re off a bit early and manage to get a very good parking space (inside Panasonic). Seeing huge number of people wearing kimonos is definitely new to us and it’s interesting.

It’s a one stop Japanese food center and this is one of the day that most of the food in the house is Japanese Food. The setup of the festival is really nice. Since it’s done in a Stadium you can sit down on the field with your family (having your own little family picnic) while enjoying the drum show and the ceremonial dance ceremony.

We’ll be coming back for BON ODORI 2012

Since the reduction of DSLR Camera prices, more people can afford to buy the machine. The easy to use features plus the editing software makes an amateur looks professional as long he knows how to handle the software.

It also triggers the photography industry in this country especially during wedding seasons. And it's a good money making business since you can earn up to RM 1000 per wedding !!!. Last week while attending a wedding not far from my house, I've taken the opportunity to snap some photos of wedding photographer in action. Cool .....

WAFI ( IN WINTER MODE)

If there's a winter season in this country , probably this will be what wafi is going to wear for an outing. The rain coat ( not winter coat) was bought from 'bundle' shop and the condition is still 'mint'.

We've decided to try it on baby wafi and as usual she's very excited but it's not raining on that day , so the 'rain' test has to be canceled. Anyway enjoy the photos.

I've bought few DSLR magazines just to look at how the professionals work especially in preparing for photo shoots. What I do not know about these mags is it also have some example of photo shoot experiments that one can perform on their own.

This is my first experimental works which is combining the actual things (in this case .. a mini teapot) with photos from books as the background. Not bad for a first timer. With few adjustment it do looks natural.

Better know as CM, it's the center of KL ( the old version). It's a popular spot in KL for people to meet. "I'll wait for you at CM...." , " Let's lepak at CM guys .." . Why CM ? Well probably it's at the center of almost everything route in KL and it's next to Dayabumi the tallest building at that time ...

Although today the attention has been shifted to KLCC, CM still remains very important to city folks. It's now the art capital of the city. With the addition of Kasturi Walk it enhances CM capability especially for outside tourist.

This solo shoot is not only to revisit my personal memory of CM but to experience the 'CM Soul' which cannot be found anywhere else.

SOLO SHOOT : THE NEW PUDU RAYA

Pudu Raya stations was the heart and soul of KL public transportation. I remember during my schooling days in 1980s this place was crowded with people. It has some of the best jeans tailoring expert in town. The makan place was also 'syookkkkk'.

When the government announced that this place will be upgraded, I've mixed feelings. I'm a bit sad because the old setup will not be there anymore, but I'm happy because Pudu Raya will be upgraded into a modern infrastructure like the other infrastructure icon in KL.

This solo shoot activity was to revisit Pudu Raya, remembering the good old days while appreciating the current modern upgrade which is clean and comfortable.

The date is 11/6/2010. The gap between wafi and kakak widad is 8 years. It's also the first day of World Cup 2010. The place is PUSRAWI Kota Damansara. Alhamdulillah Wafi Hanani was born.

Wafi has been the light of our life (our = Ayah, Ibu, Abang Imi and Kak widad). Ayah do admit it's not easy during the first few months trying to adapt (the last time was 8 years back !!!) but we've made it and 1 year later Wafi is the most 'comel' baby in town.

This is a very rare opportunity. I was at the Upin & Ipin carnival in Ipoh. We arrived at the carnival site (Stadium Indera Mulia) about 5 minutes from the opening ceremony. The carnival was officiated by Perak Menteri Besar.

I was waiting for my kids at the Upin & Ipin booth and was surprised when the MB and other guest of honor was walking towards the booth. Then only I know that MB will launch some of the new product from Upin & Ipin.

Since I'm holding my DSLR the media coordinator invite me to the booth (probably thinking that I'm from the media). So not wasting the opportunity I joined the other 'real' media photographer and manage to get the best angle for that event.

Not bad for a rookie photographer like me.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY 2011 : JAPANESE GARDEN, IPOH

It's located inside Taman Dr Senivasagam. This was my favourite playing when I was a small kid staying in Ipoh in 1990s. During that period there as a Japanese garden but near the residence of MB Perak. Probably the shifted it to Taman Dr.

Anyway, the concept is fantastic, almost everything in this garden is all about Japan. It's like walking in a Japanese Garden somewhere in Japan. I found out that this garden was a joint program between Ipoh and Fukuoka.

It's a hot spot for wedding photography sessions.

I was introduced to this place by a friend of mine. According to him , the food court serve one of the best Rojak Mamak and Mee Goreng Mamak in town . Since it's not far from the Upin & Ipin Carnival , I've decided to have a go at it.

Awesome and full of flavour (mamak flavour of course) , this is the old school Mamak delicacies and the whole troop (my family) really give high marks for the food. The price is not that bad (you've to consider it's in the center of Ipoh) ..both Rojak and Mee Goreng cost RM 3.50 ...make sure to add Teh Tarik Kow ...and you're in Food Heaven ...

The next time you hot Ipoh ...remember Green Town Rojak and Mee Goreng ...

Another must do event during school breaks. This place is awesome, located in the same area (not far) with the high places of Cameron Highland, it shares some of the offering of the highlands. The river was idle especially for kids and the best part is the facilities ...good job Majlis Daerah Tapah ...

Kuala Woh is Tapah hidden treasure ...people always think about Lata Kinjang , when talking about Tapah offerings, but the truth is ...it's Kuala Woh. The next time you're in Cameron Highland , on the way down (using old Tapah route) please make sure you put Kuala Woh as part of the plan.

I'm very bad in remembering birthdays, including mine. So every single year comes 28th March ..my dear wife will remind me of such occasions. Normally it's just a nice family 'makan' outing...but this we've decided to held a potluck/bbq with the whle family.

Not bad , since everybody bring the food , bbq went as planned and to add the fun I got my birthday cake ...yummyyy. This year I'm 38 and looking forward to another great and productive year ahead ...

FAMILY TRIP : CHERATING

I've been hearing about this place so many times, yet never have the opportunity to arrange a trip. Finally last month after carefully planning with family members , we're off to Cherating. Driving through Karak Highway (with a breakfast stop at Bentong) took about 3 hours.

Our chalet (I give a rate of 3 over 5) is about 5 minutes walk to the beach. The beach was OK (I rated pangkor higher) , really love the white sand which is really white. The kids really having fun and the weather is fantastic. We also had a seafood session at the famous tanjung lumpur ( the only setback is, we choose the wrong "kedai makan").

Overall it's not that bad. Probably the selection of chalet can be improvised duirng the next trip (if any ...)

TRIBUTE TO LOUIS

I'm dedicating this posting to Louis, my very good blogging friend and one of the frequent visitors to my blog. I'm really shock the receive the info from pak idrus that Louis has passed away. Louis is from Seattle, USA (the land of seatlle mariners where ichiro suzuki trade his skill in baseball). I was connected to him through pak idrus's blog. Since then we've been friends (through blogging).

I remember one very interesting post from him regarding a stray tiger roaming near his housing area. And it it in the news later that day. Also his trip to the Caribbean which is very interesting. Another a must posting by him is story on his grand-daughter.

Another outing with my beloved family. This time we've decided to try arabic food. This place was suggested by my friend Fauzan, who's working with Madinah University (Shah Alam branch). And his suggestion is based from his Arab colleagues.

The location is not far from UNISEL in Shah Alam (it's in section 7...). The place is called D'ARAB CAFE and it's very famous among Shah Alam's folks. Overall I think it's not really bad ...the rice was fantastic (i think one of the best I've tasted) , but I prefer if the dishes is made a little bit spicy ...(probably lidah org melayu kot) ...Anyway another fantastic family outing and everybody is happy.

CANADA ..OOOO ..CANADA. Way back in 1995, I was selected by my university to participate in a student exchange program to Saskatchewan, Canada. The 3 months program was amazing with a lots of first ...among them was my first time experiencing real snow, first time to work in an office with 100% canadian friendly staff and also my first time tasting the original maple syrup ....

This photo was taken during the last week of our program. This is Banff among the best tourist hotspot in Calgary, the Lake Louis was breathtaking. Probably in the future if I have the opportunity , Canada will always be the place that I wanted to go ..again.

Immediately after SPM, I was offered to do my matriculation program in UUM, Sintok. During the first year I was placed to class 1.10. This was the first time ever I had female students as my class mate, it was an interesting experience. After nearly 20 years and thanks to Facebook we manage to organize a mini reunion at Restoran Puteri in Sg Penchala. Although only 1/5 of the total population (30 students in the class) was available , I would consider the event as a success. Probably the next gathering we'll get better number of participation.

Alumni Sekolah Alam Shah is an organizations that includes old boys of Sekolah Alam Shah , one of the elite all boys boarding school in Malaysia. I'm one of the proud member from batch 1986-1990. Attending the yearly dinner is a must do event for me and for this year it was in Shangri la Hotel. Officiated by the Sultan of Selangor, it was as usual a very grand event. But more importantly it's the time to meet old friends , seniors and juniors. The event finished at 11.30 pm but we've (my batch) decided to continue our own mini gathering at a coffee house near by till 3.00 am ....Thanks to sassians 86-90 for attending ..looking forward to the next dinner in 2012.

The above has been practiced by many schools. If I'm not mistaken they have a campaign called ADK (Akhbar Dalam Kelas) or Newspaper in Class. I've read a very interesting books on this last weekend. The book discussed about using newspaper to ignite the interest of children to learn more about what's happening around them.

The book suggest spending your time with your children reading and discussing about events written in the newspaper. At least 15 minutes per dayt should be enough. I'm planning to start this very soon and hoping to see the results. My eldest did show interest in reading newspaper although he only concentrates on the sport sections.

This is the current trend, especially since the price of DSLR Camera is more affordable now. I've a group of friends (from uni days) who have organized few outing trips. For a beginner like me It's an opportunity to learn how to get the best from my EOS 1000D. Apart from learning it's also a session to hang out with friends and getting the latest updates and gossips (yes , i like gossips).

This is also part of stress reduction moment since you're away from all the problems and doing what you like with friends you love. The last trip to Sungai Congkak was really nice. I might take my family for a picnic over there very soon (need to study the map first).

It's one of those public holidays in the middle of the week (tuesday actually), and after few minutes of brainstorming with my wife we've decided to take the 3 kids to a short family trip to Kuala Selangor (30 minutes drive from my house).

The no 1 attraction over there is the famous Bukit Malawati which is full with history. They even setup a museum up there. The scenery was awesome with majestic view of Kuala Selangor. Apart from the history another must experience moment is the friendly Bukit Malawati monkeys. Really clean and friendly (unlike some of the monkeys at other places). Monkey food seller are they to assist in getting the right food to feed the monkey.

We ended the trip with a good lunch at Restoran Bagan, famous for it's Roasted Chicken (the best in the whole Selangor...)

DSLR OUTING : SUNGAI CONGKAK

This is our 3rd outing as a group (me and my uni mates). And this time I've decided to focus on the river (since it's sungai congkak). I wanted to learn how to create a flowing white watery effect. My 'guru' for the trip was Mosjo (a banker by profession).

Using his tripod, with f equal to 11 and iso being set to 100, I'm all set to shot. The result was really fantastic (at least for a beginner like me). I manage to get the shot that I was looking for. This trip has create awareness for me in terms of preserving the nature. Sungai Congkak need to be protected from the cruel unorganized development.

Now, my next project is to get my own tripod.

MY GARDEN

Gardening is one of my favourite activities. I do agree when people said that it involves commitment (watering the 'pokok' and others), but it's one of my best stress reliever. Nothing beat the view of green carpeting grass and flowers blooming here and there.

To minimize some of the extra efforts ( i'm a bit busy nowadays :) ), I've decided to go for pot gardening. Pot gardening is easier to manage and best of all it's very neat (also easy to rearrange). MY next project is to add bird houses (birds are most welcome...)

It's normal for an academician like me to attend academic conference. It's like an opportunity to meet people especially the experts , getting the latest feedback and at the same time presenting paper.

Last 2010 I attended one conference on Knowledge Management in KT. Organized by UUM probably the only International conference concentrating on KM in this country. The running of the conference what not bad. Having it in Kuala Terengganu give me the chance to experience the beauty of KT and of course the Crystal Mosque.

MY PRIMARY SCHOOL

SRK Sri Kinta was among the best primary school in Ipoh in the 90s. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to join the school. It was an all boys school and with not so bad facilities (I've to admit the building was a bit old since it was an old British military camp).

After nearly 25 years, I was back to my primary school last year. It definitely bring back all memories good and bad (and I was the school head boy in 1986). The old building still remains , which is good especially if an old boy like me drop by once in a while for a visit. An they add several new building due to increased number of student (and I was told it's not an all boy school anymore...)

Anyway it's a good trip especially to show my old primary school to my family.

MY GAZEBO

This was one of my wish list last year. If I can have one it's going to be an area to be utilized for family breakfast and afternoon tea. If I want to buy a complete gazebo made from wood it's going to cost a lot and due to budget constraint I've decided to built it stage by stage.

Getting Abang Sani (my wife relative) is a bonus since I can 'negotiate' the pricing. After 3 months finally my gazebo completed. It's a simple 10 by 10 setup enough to cover the 5 of us. Total cost is less than RM 1500 which is really good because a wood based gazebo with that kind of size will be around RM 5000. Not bad at all.

There's a place not far from my house (near Shah Alam) called National Botanical Garden, and the highlight is the 4 season house.

It's a simulation kind of area where it will simulates whatever weather that the 4 season country is having . For example at this point of time the 4 season house is simulating winter season complete with artificial snow (they bring down the temperature).

So last thaipusam public holiday I manage to bring my family to experience winter. It's almost like the real one and even they setup a snow man. The crowd surprisingly was not that much probably because it's winter and it's minus 7 (which is really cold for a typical malaysian like us).

Anyway it's a very good experience. The 4 season house has been there since the 90s and my first experience was not bad at all.

This is like a must do activity whenever we are back in Kulim (my hometown). So during the Chinese New Year break I manage to organize the ferry trip with my family. Probably due to the public holiday it was jam pack with people.

The ferry ride for me is an interesting family activity because you can get the kids to experience this unique and nostalgic ride (and it's cheap ...). One of my favourite to do list on the ferry is to taste the excellent 'roti' at the mini cafe on board the ferry, not sure why but it taste heavenly yummy ....

Once we can see the KOMTAR building it a signal that we've arrived. Depending on the mood and financial strength (hehehe) we either go to the 'NASI KANDAR' spot or we catch the next ferry going back to the mainland ...whatever it is penang ferry ride is super cool .....

I can't remember the last time I'm here but KLIA for me is one the the best International Airport in the world. I was fortunate to be able to contribute during the construction as part of Esso IT team.

The architecture is world class and the facilities are among the best in Malaysia. I think if I can select one airport to be stranded (for a very long time) ...I'll pick KLIA. Reminds me of a film TERMINAL where Tom Hanks is the hero.

So last month I was there with my family to send my very good friend , Zaki and his family , to Curitiba , Brazil for a 3 years working assignment. And as usual KLIA never disappointed me, even at 1 am (Zaki's flight was at 1.30 am) .

I was recommended to this service center by the salesperson when I bought my Proton Exora. It's located not far from Meru and inside the Pantai Baru auto complex. The first thing that you'll get after servicing registration is a RM 2 food coupon to be spend at the cafe (not bad , because at other service center you'll get nothing).

The waiting area is not bad because you'll get free WIFI. There's also cable TV available plus the magazines. Also few LCD monitor will inform you the status of your car from checking by technician until the last stage which is washing. Waiting time will take between 1 to 2 hours (or more) depending on the cars being serviced.

It's one of the better service center so far and should be followed by other service center.

As an academician one of my responsibility is attending academic workshops and conferences. Last month I was asked to attend a 2 day conference in Petaling Jaya. Because my wife has other commitment and the kids are having extra classes, I've decided to go alone.

Indeed it was a really good getaway for me. Being alone ( although for 1 night) give opportunity for me to sit down and think about my plans for 2011. The hotel room which is really cozy do helps in energizing the brain to produce idea. No wonder song composers and novel writers do this frequently.

I'm a firm believer of family comes first ...and one of my favourite past time is family outing. So far one of the cheapest way is to utilize the public parks. It's free and complete with almost everything.

One of our best public park is the Shah Alam Lake Park located just 20 minutes drive from our house. The last that we have was a morning picnic (it was a last minute decision ...) . The first thing to do once we're there is to find the picnic spot. Picnic bench is provided and if it's full you can always go for the gazebos or even lay down on the picnic mat.

While enjoying the breakfast, the kids can have fun at the playground. Nothing beats a hot cup of coffee with "ROTI CANAI" while reading the morning newspaper and without the interference from the kids.

It's a must go trip every year. This time around the NSC was under construction ( I was not aware of that) but the Dinosaur Exhibition save my day. The mini scientific class was also very good. The kids was shown how to do a very simple science test.

Then there was also a computer graphic simulation. It shows how to create cartoon characters using simple computer application. Highlight of the day was definitely the Dinosaur Exhibition. The robotic dino was excellent and there was 30 of them.

I was told that this year (2011) NSC will open it's Scientific Park just outside of the NSC. It's another initiative to create awareness about science and technology to Malaysians especially children.

School Open Day is one of the many activities organized by my kids’ school. Since I was not able to be there last year I’ve decided to put it as one of the highest priority in the to do list this year. Food stalls were everywhere and it’s good since certain percentage of the sales profit will go to the school PTB (Parent Teacher Board).

Also it’s and opportunity to get to know other parents and in some cases sitting down discussing things related to schooling while enjoying the food (I’ve to admit the nasi lemak was really good…J). I’ve met few teachers and was able to have a very good discussion with them. It’s good to see that the teachers are having fun since most of them were manning the stalls on that day.

I was able to capture some of the moments through my EOS 1000D. Will put the 2011 event in my must go list for next year (while hoping for the nasi lemak ‘sedap’ to be available also).

Our house was completed in 2004. It is a simple single storey house with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms completed with a separate store room, garage and gazebo. During the building process I’ve always insist on having a house that is spacious especially in the living room and also I’ve planned to have a mini library on my own (and also a reading room for guest).

Last 2 weeks with my DSLR I’ve decided to a photo shoot focusing on my house interior decoration. Some of the shot was taken using a ladder to get the best angle. Looking at the result , it is clear that it’s spacious (probably the white wall play its role)

After a long day at the office , it’s important to have a space where you could have a well deserve break and a comfortable house really helps.

This is a global culture where during important moments such as festive celebration, birthday and others , one will have gathering at their house inviting friends and relative to celebrate. In Malaysia since we have few festive seasons to celebrate , Open House is a very common event.

During last Hari Raya, I've been to few of my friend's (mostly in KL) and I notice it's not just about the makan but it's also an opportunity to meet old friends. Even during one of the OH , I met with one of my blogging friend (mdm principal).

Although it's easier to set up one OH nowadays with the help of catering services, a good planning is very important especially the list of guest to invite. Personally I think it's not about how expensive the comparison between one OH and another but it's more of having an OH that is meaningful to everybody.

In English that will be a wedding ceremony and it’s my sister in law turns to celebrate hers. It has been a culture especially for Malay of Javanese descent to conduct such an event by involving almost everybody in the neighborhood. All task from chopping the beef, arranging the table and chairs, cooking the dishes and others are being done by working together.

For me personally, it is the time where I have the opportunity to meet with relatives and friends that I have not seen for a while. The ‘kenduri’ especially for Malay- Java people normally held 3 days and 3 night , so you can imagine the amount of works that involved to ensure that everything is running smooth and this is done without any professional assistance from a wedding planner or catering services. It’s tiring but satisfying especially when everything runs according to plan.

Looking forward to another ‘kenduri’ in a very near future, in fact it’s this coming December.

This year Hari Raya gave me the opportunity to test my DSLR camera and I've decided to explore the monochrome mode which focus on delivering B/W photo. I've selected some of the best moment including few from Sekinchan (with padi field as background).

Probably for some B/W is outdated but for me it's classic but yet refreshing and some of the photo is better in B/W mode compare when in color mode, I'm not sure why but as long as it 'cantik' it's ok for me.

I was introduce to the term DSLR ( digital single lens reflex) camera by few friends that have been involved in this hobby for quiet some time. My first photo shooting trip was at FRIM. Kepong with a Sony DSLR borrowed from a friend. That trip was very addictive that I've decided to have my own DSLR camera.

After few consultation and calculation of the budget ( I just bought a BBQ Grill remember...) the decision is to purchased the entry level unit from Canon ..the EOS 1000D and I'm loving every bit of moment using it. Still the are millions of techniques to be learnt and lots of room to be improved. Planning to take a proper photo shooting class next month and from there we'll see how is the progress.

Looking forward for the next outing probably in Taman Pertanian Bukit Cahaya.

Like the good old times ...hmmmmm

One of my fondest memory was secondary schooling days at ALAM SHAH from 1986 to 1990. It's a place where I was trained to be a matured citizen and it did. Life in an all boys school is not easy but I survived and loving every minutes of it.

So after quit some time I'm back at my old school, although the name has been change but the memory remains. I was visiting an old friend who's teaching at the school and with his help I have all the access available.

Overall the school ave not change that much , the scenario, the feel, the aroma is more a less the same like when I was here 20 plus years back. Glad to bump into my old teacher who still serve the school... you still look great Cikgu Arif Saniran. Was a bit surprised that the school song was not the same (probably since the school name has been change ..so did the school song).

It was a very sentimental moment and I'm looking forward for another visit probably the next time with my family.

Not bad for first testing ..need improvement on the marination

Every time I saw Mr Robert Rainford in his show "License to Grill", I always thought that BBQing is one of the coolest thing to do and I remember during my stay in Canada long time ago, my friend will always have a bbq session at their house especially during weekends. I've bought a very basic BBQ grill set few years back but having problem every time to start the fire because is not a gas burner grill.

So this month when I saw one advertisement in the newspaper showing affordable gas burner grill with good discount at HOUZ DEPOT in Mutiara Damansara, I've decided to buy it (the smallest/cheapest model). After 2 hours of self installation (I've should have ask them to install it ...) my BBQ Grill machine is ready to grillllll ...

The first thing I noticed is how quick to start grilling since it's using gas burner (no hassle) and secondly this grill is equipped with thermometer which makes it easy to check the temperature. My first attempt was 2 sirloin steak and 4 chicken drumstick (marinated with black pepper and honey). And it was really good.

It has been nearly 2 months since my last posting. And it's nothing related to lack of imagination or ideas but more to giving extra attention to Wafi Hanani , our latest addition to the family. Probably due to the football addiction of the father , she decided to come out from her hiding during the first day of World Cup where vuvuzela was dominating the scene in South Africa.

My last newborn experience was 8 years ago and the 'sabbatical leave' means that baby Wafi is like my first baby (8 years is a long time ...). Waking up at 2 am consistently taking care of Wafi is an interesting experience and doing that while enjoying the live football from South Africa is PRICELESS.

I can't wait for the time where baby Wafi is big enough for us to continue our traveling activities which will be very different since the member count is now 5.

This is our first visit to Bukit Tinggi, probably among the top 5 highland retreat site in Malaysia. I've a working assignment nearby so decided to take the whole family to experience some of the attractions.

Firstly, it was a not so easy journey driving to the peak since the road (was not bad) but very steep. I can feel my MPV screaming each time we hit the steep road. t took us an hour to reach the central attraction which is the Colmar Tropical which is actually a resort built according to 16th century French Castle.

From there we went to the Rabbit Farm and the Japanese garden, the good news for me is ...transportation is provided via shuttle bus (or it looks more like a shuttle truck...). The Japanese garden was really interesting because this garden is one of the first to be made according to the garden in Japan..outside of Japan, and the low temperature indeed provides the cooling effect to the surrounding.

Overall it was really good. The price especially for food was a bit expensive but the attraction provided for visitors was really worth it.

If I'm not mistaken I've written about the above few months back but without any photos. So to ensure that my blogging friends can share the delicious CKT experience I've decided to do the second version.

This humble establishment is located not far from Klang wet market and it's only operated at night 6 days a week with Monday being the off day. This stall was interestingly introduce to my wife by her chinese friend and since then it has been in our makan-makan calendar.

Now what is so special about this food. I've 2 main selling points (beside hundreds of other points...) , firstly the smell is just out of this world (cannot describe it in writings ...you've to try it yourself) and no 2 is the gravy which is the best and one thing for sure the taste never change. The price is not bad RM 3.50 for a tasty experience. Normally it goes well with otak-otak and satay.

So, the next time you happen to be in Kelang, ,make sure CKT Klang is part of your agenda.
