SAWIT CORNER

Welcome to SAWIT CORNER

KARIPAP JEEN (you can see the comparison with the ordinary karipap)

Enjoying the scenery and the food

The setup is simple yet very relaxing

Last week I’ve decided to organize a trip to Tanjung Bidara (that is in Melaka) . The trip from Klang to Tanjung Bidara took about 2 hours. This is not the first time we went to that place but this is the first time I notice a very interesting ‘makan’ or eating place about 15 minutes to Tanjung Bidara.

It’s call SAWIT CORNER (Sawit is Palm Tree in English). The name suits the place which is surrounded by Palm Tree. It creates a cool and cozy environment. One of the major attraction is KARIPAP JEEN (extra large curry puff). Looking at the size I think it’s 6 times the size of a normal karipap and it comes with a special sauce.

So the next time you are on a trip to Tanjung Bidara Melaka using the Ayer Keroh Exit please concentrate for the SAWIT CORNER signage (it’s on the right side) and make sure you stop and experience the ‘makan’ while surrounded by mother nature.

BUDGET HOTEL (A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE)

Good Location (Maju Junction is across the road)

Nice setup and the bed is spacious

The super shower (a showerful experience .....)

It's school break and as usual the kids are looking forward for a vacation trip. I've decided due to the slow economic situation to go very domestic that is Kuala Lumpur. The trip is 3 days 2 night that includes Petrosains, Aquaria, Berjaya Time Square , KL Tower and others.

But the actual highlight of the vacation was our first experience staying in Tune Hotel, Malaysia very own budget hotel. And very surprisingly it's a wonderful experience. The total price for 2 night stays is RM 120 plus another RM 20 (for 12 hours air conditioning) is very cheap (considering it's weekend and during school break).
The room was spacious and neat. The exclusion of TV was good since it force us to sleep early and because of that we manage to start fresh early in the morning. I must congratulates the management for installing a very comfortable bathroom with a huge shower (I could spend the whole hour in that bathroom ...hehehe).

The establishment of a kopitiam and seven eleven outlet at the lobby was very convenient. To those looking for a budget hotel with a comfortable facilities and good location why not try TUNE HOTEL.

MEDICAL LEAVE (MC)

I'm not always on MC (the last one was 2 years back !!!). But I was on one yesterday. It was a very high fever and I was bedded for the whole day ....hhhhmmm.

Being very sick for the whole day give me a good chance to re-think and re-focus about my plan for year 2009 (surprisingly thinking while sick was not bad !!!). Also it makes me understand more about my body ...that is after a while it need a break and if the break is not given...the result is high fever !!! (more to force break ...hehehehe)

Anyway, it's a good and well-deserved rest and I'm back to office and blogsphere ...

A1GP 2008

I've never been to Sepang International Circuit (SIC), although it has been there for ages. One of the reason is probably due to price of the ticket which is expensive and also the circuit itself which located quite far (60 km from my house).

However, last weekend I was invited by a friend of mine to the A1GP (the world cup of GP) at SIC and since it's free (complimentary ticket) I decided to go. It was fantastic, definitely it's totally different comparing just watching it from the TV and being there. The bursting sound of the engines, it's out of this world.

Although , our driver Fairuz Fauzi only manage to grab 10th position (due to radio error), still he did very well. Looking forward to another opportunity...hopefully Formula 1 in Sepang 2009 !!!

MY POCKET FINANCIAL CONTROLLER

Monitoring daily expenditure is something that I've done for quite some time and I've to admit , it do works well. I always have this small pocket book that will be always with me and I'll track down all my expenditure. It's good especially when looking at the details and knowing where's my dollar and cents went to.

At least at the end of the month when the the reserve is nearly empty , I can look back at the pocket book and will scold myself for spending so unwisely.

MY RIDE ....

I've been driving my beloved Daihatsu Ascend for the past 7 years. I've bought it from a very good friend of mine who is at that time was being relocated to Singapore for a 2 year assignments.

Well, I've to admit it's not a ferarri or bmw or merc ..but It suits my needs (which is definitely not for speed), it's low on fuel consumption and easy to drive. My daily mileage is about 80 km and my ASCEND 1.6 only need RM 10 of fuel.

Not many on the road but it's a bigger version of Daihatsu Charade. So the next time you come across a purple Daihatsu Ascend with a registration number of WGQ 4693 ...do give a HONK ....

What you get when you've to work on Sunday :

a) Less traffic jam ..the road is yours

c) Less bosses ..hehehe

What you do not get when you've to work on sunday :

IT'S SUNDAY ....YOUR WEEK IS NOT COMPLETE BECAUSE YOU MISS SUNDAY ...THAT'S IT ....

A NEW MPV FROM PROTON

The above banner is actually part of the promotion for the eagerly waited PROTON first MPV. I personally think they should have done it much earlier since MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) is getting very popular in this country.
It has been like a trend where most family in this country (from what I've seen) have 2 cars. One is the small, not so fuel consuming type of car to go the office and the next will be the family car which is the MPV.
I really hope that Proton will come up with a very good design and good pricing since the 2 is often look by Malaysian when they're buying car.

FIRST AID KIT BOX....

I'm not sure if your house do have one but mine do not !!! I just realize that last week while searching for aspirin (panadol). People always make assumption and mine was I do have it somewhere in my house. After 30 minutes searching in desperado mode , no aspirin found and worst I need it badly ....

So my lesson learned was to have a proper first aid kit box AND MOST IMPORTANTLY complete with all the necessary items so that the next time I'm in the same desperado mode searching for aspirin or other medicine I know I have a first aid kit box.

BRAIN EXERCISE

I've read a book that stress on the importance of brain massage or brain exercise. Sound a bit strange but the more I read , the more I noticed that frequent and routine job for example going to work at the same time and using the same path is not fun for your brain. And a brain that is not motivated is not good as a whole.

The book suggest the simplest brain exercise is to do some different once a while to your frequent task. For example going to work using a different route or instead of TT session at your favourite mamak stall do it at a chinese kopitiam.

Good luck

SATAY HUT (TANJUNG KARANG)

A friend of mine once told me about a satay (barbeque beef) shop somewhere in Tanjung karang that sells extra large satay. I've trying to go there but not successful. Yesterday while travelling back from Teluk Intan (attending my grandma funeral), I've noticed a huge stall with a sign "SATAY HUT". Immediately I hit the brake and drive my car to the spacious car park provided.

And my friend was right. They do sell extra large satay with a price of RM 1.10 per satay. I would say it's about double the size of a normal satay. So the next time you hit Tanjung Karang please look for Satay Hut. It's a satay experience with a different twist.

LOG BOOK (BOOKS SUMMARY)

Reading can be addictive and that's absolutely true. But I do noticed that many do not write down the summary once they finish reading. I'm not saying that it's compulsory but I believe it's much better to jot down the main points in a log book.

I've done that and found it very satisfying especially when you can see that how many books you've read (mine is 35 and counting). But not only that you can also browse through the summary (plus the sketching or diagram) just to recap what's the book is all about. Fellow blogger Pak Adib is good in doing this.

MEMORY JAR

I've read an article about the above few months back. It's a very creative concept of "sentimental" memory database. Most of us probably do have our own diary or blog to jot down the important occasions in our day to day living, things like birthday, the date we bought our new car or house, the day our son/daughter being accepted to the university and others.

The concept of memory jar is basically the same. The only difference is that all the "sweet" moments will be written down on a piece of paper and to be kept inside the jar. The writer do suggest that the jar to be opened during special gathering for example family reunion or birthday .

I'm planning to have one very soon.

TTD LIST (AFTER A LONG BREAK)

Well, finally the long raya break is just around the corner and I believe everybody (especially Malaysians) is doing all the necessary preparation either for eidul-fitri, going back to own home town or probably going for vacation (latest trend).

I thing I did notice from previous years experience is the first working day after coming from the break. Definitely the motivation is at the lowest (probably I'm not alone ...hehehe) and I personally tend not to remember what need to be done or continued.

So for this year on the last day of work before the 1 week break, which is tomorrow (yahhhooo!!!!), I'll jot down all the THINGS TO DO (TTD) list and put it on my table. I hope once I'm back from the short 'honey moon' at least I'll be more focus (50/50 percentage) with the TTD list.

BUNDLE SHOP

This is Malaysia equivalent to Salvation Army shop or Value Village (in Canada). It sells used clothing from as far as USA and Japan. I've to admit I'm addicted to it where I can easily spend more than 1 hour just to hunt for my favourite sporting team shirts or caps.

And as a fan of the American Sport (Celtics and Red Sox) this is THE PLACE. And the best thing about it I can get it as cheap as RM 5.00. Bundle shop used to be regarded as poor man shop but I've noticed the trend has change as more people from the middle class could be seen hunting for their desired items.

KHAIRIL HISYAM

I received a call from an old friend yesterday telling me that Khairil Hisyam has passed away after involving in a car accident in Tripoli, Libya. He's the second secretary for Malaysian Embassy in Libya.

I've known him while he was working with me in Gombak before joining the government sector to work as a diplomat. Hisyam is a true example of a hardworking young man and brilliant communicator. For me , the selection of Hisyam to be in the diplomatic services is correct and he've been in Libya for the past 4 years doing excellent job.

Although I'm really sad for this to happen but one thing for sure it happen while he was proudly serving his country. AL-FATIHAH.

SOLVING MY MORNING CHAOS

Most of my morning (working days) will start with a bit chaotic (and it can be worse than that). Since we do not have any maid, we've divided the morning task and I'm in charge of watering the plants (yep my mini garden) and preparing no 1 (my eldest son). No 2 (my daughter) is taken care by my wife.

Although the system looks in control but the truth is far from it ( i would say out of control). Since I've to make sure that we (me and No 1) leave the house at 7.00 am sharp, I tend to rush most of the processes. Finding the car key can be quiet challenging not to mention mobile phone, daily planner and others. Not sure if this happen to anybody else but I've to improvise the situation.

I've read a book about time management and one of the solution to my problem is to use a simple notice board just next to the door (and make sure it's the door you use to exit for work). You can list down any last minute check or any special instruction probably as a reminder and according to the author it works.

Looking forward to improve the morning chaos.

The scenery of tea plantation caught from the inside the bus

The bus station at Tanah Rata, Cameron Highland. After 2 and a half hour journey from Tapah.

Bus Driver view going up to Cameron Highland .

Cameron Highland is Malaysia version of"Aspen, Colorado" minus the snow. Most of us malaysians prefer to drive all the way to the places like Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Last few month I've decided to take a bus instead of driving.

Me and my other half started our journey from Tapah Bus Station and the journey from Tapah to Cameron Highland took about 2 and a half hours. The ticket was RM 5.70 per person one trip. And as a bonus only 2 of us plus another 4 foreign travellers were in the bus.

For the first time I can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the trip , which I could not have when I'm driving. I'm planning to have another similar trip probably in 2 months time and this time the 2 kids will be in the list.

BOOK REVIEW (THE PRESENT)

Last weekend I've the opportunity to read this book authored by Spencer Johnson. It's a simple book but full with surprises. The book concentrate on THE PRESENT , the best gift from you to yourself. It's a fictional story of a boy and an old man. One day the old man promised to the boy that he'll give the best ever present to the boy and every day the boy will visit the old man to get his present.

You'll have to wait until the mid phase of the book to actually know what is THE PRESENT. And THE PRESENT = Focusing on what is happening RIGHT NOW and appreciating it. And according to the old wise man in order to get the present you'll have to take a break from your regular routine.

According to the old man to maximize the present we should LIVE and WORK with PURPOSE. Overall summary of this great book :

a) BE IN THE PRESENT
b) LEARN FROM THE PAST
c) PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

BOOK REVIEW (RUDE AWAKENING)

A book written by Maryann Keller who has vast experience dealing with General Motor (GM) management culture. It's a story that reveals what was the actual problem that contributes to the fall of the giant company that once was the pride of america automobile industry.

The terms "14th floor" was very important because that is the area where most of the decision makers of GM were LOCATED located. Also the issue of GM attitude towards Japanese automobile company invasion to the US auto scene which to them is " NOT A BIG DEAL, WE CAN HANDLE THAT". The problem was they are serious in improving lots of thing accept for the improvement of the cars which was their biggest disadvantage compare to the Japanese cars.

Also the story of the partying cultures although during bad performance results. GM however accept the importance to joint force with Japanese company and finally decided to work with Toyota forming a company GM-Toyota. Their first project is a Chevy Nova.

The joint venture did not hit very well as the American is having hard time to adapt some of the Japanese working culture especially KAIZEN. No proper training on the robotic training also create problems.

In 1986 Ford exceed GM total sales and becomes the number one automotive company in the US.

Overall it's a very straight forward telling the truth writting and it's clear running a very big company and merging with another company from another country is not an easy task.

Weekend at Sekolah Alam Shah

It's always good to be back to my old secondary school and it's even better coming back as alumni to contribute. Last weekend Alam Shah Old Boy Associations (ASAS) Rugby Club organized PutraJaya Seven a seven a side 2 days rugby tournament attracting 16 clubs and 12 schools.

My responsibility for the 2 days event was to be the announcer aka the DJ. Although I've to admit my voice quality is no where near compared to the Pro DJ at the Celcom (our main sponsor) booths but as a first timer ...not too bad.

The highlight was when the actual MC for the prize giving ceremony was not available and to make matter worse the main VIP is the Minister himself Dato Ismail Sabri and I was forced to be the replacement aka BIDAN terjun MC. Anyway the whole thing went as planned and I've the chance to meet face to face with the Minister (Dato Ismail Sabri is a cool guy).

Coming back as an old boy to contribute (although not in cash) do have a very significant moment to me. It brings me the memories of looking at the old boys gathering during my schooling days.

Lastly, SEKOLAH ALAM SHAH YOU'RE THE BEST AND I'M PROUD TO BE PART OF IT.

WAREHOUSE SALE

Warehouse Sale....it's an event where the sales will be in a big warehouse and it's cheap. I've experienced that last weekend. It's an annual warehouse sale for SHARP ROXY Malaysia and it's located at their factory in Shah Alam.

We went there very early about 30 mins before the event which starts at 8.30 am. I spend 5 mins to look at my prime target which is the LCD TV (due to low budget mine will be the 32 inches)

8.15 am the sales start (15 mins early) and I straight away grab the LCD set that I've targeted earlier. Once paid and tested , I left the sale with a big smile because finally I've my own LCD TV (and for me that's a bIg achievement)

So what did I get :

1) A Sharp Aquas LCD TV 32 (market price is RM 2400. I bought it at RM 1400)
2) A saving of RM 1000
3) Satisfaction

THE BEST CENDOL IN TOWN

From Wikipedia (Cendol [pronounced 'chen-dul'] or es cendol is a traditional dessert originating from Java, Indonesia, but is also popular in Malaysia, Singapore, and Southern Thailand (where it is called lorkchorng singapore ลอดข่องสิงคโปร์). The dessert's basic ingredients consist of shaved ice, coconut milk, starch noodles with green food coloring (usually sourced from the pandan leaf), and palm sugar. Red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, and creamed corn are optional additions)

And right here in Klang you can experience one of the best Cendol in Town. Located not far from "Emporium Makan" the outlet has been established since 1972. I've tasted few from other places but so far nothing compares to Cendol Klang.

It's a biography of a great man Chris Kraft the first NASA Flight Director. He was born in a small town called Phoebus and further his study at Virginia Polytech. After his study he was due to join Chance Vought ( but was not accepted because of birth certificate problem). He join NASA (aeronautical research).

Interesting fact: When the decision was to be made between Amstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on who'll be the first man in the moon by NASA, they decided on Amstrong because of his down to earth and soft spoken attitude that portrays better true american hero.

TIPS FOR A LONGER WEEKEND

A lot of motivational books out there do share tips on how to utilize Saturday and Sunday breaks. Some suggest to plan (in writing ) the agenda of the 2 days. Others suggest that you need to wake up as early as possible to enjoy the breaks.

Last Friday, right after work I was invited by a good friend of mine to a karaoke sessions (fully sponsored) at redbox in Sunway Pyramid. It was a good session and I manage to contribute few songs (sort of hehehehe...) but I do notice that when the weekend starts as early as that friday night my weekend seems to be longer. Not sure if this works for everybody but for me it seems to be working.

CHELSEA VS MALAYSIA

I manage to grad a ticket at the stadium shah alam ticket counter 45 mins before the game started. it was like being at the Stamford Bridge with so many (mostly Malaysians) football fans wearing chelsea related attire.

LFS does fielded a very strong lineup which includes Cech,JT,Carvalho and others including the impressive Deco. Watching him played last night do make me feel he'll be one of the factor for the blues to succeed next season.

The stadium was almost full, probably about 80% (that is 60,000 people) and the atmosphere was as equal as the EPL match day. I wish we can have similar scenario for our local football scene.

Final score was 2-0 to chelsea but the national team do played well with few chances of their own. And our keeper Hilmi Eliza played brilliantly to stop at least 5 clear chances. He's my man of the match or MVP for the match.

At last I could see my favourite team Chelsea in front of me playing in a EPL like surrounding. Looking forward for their next visit and also looking forward for the new season of EPL. Blues Rules !!!!!

WORKING UNDER PRESSURE

The above seems to be normal due to the progression of technology , career and looking for more money. Everyday people will talk about stress, tons of workload, hard to handle bosses and etc that's pointing back to the absolute pressure of working.

Is that a good sign. Personally, I do think that it should not be like this. We should enjoy life better, we should have more time to appreciate better things, we should wake up every morning smiling because we'll be doing tons of activities that is refreshing and make us happy...BUT ...reality check .... most of us is still trap in the our own customized economic prison and will continue to complain about the stress and pressure and continue to dream about better quality life.

QUALITY TIME (WHILE DRIVING)

Every working day I'll be out from my crib around 7 am and the driving time will be about one and a half hours (distance of 40 km plus traffic jam plus others). The same goes with coming back from work.

The driving time of plus minus 2 to 3 hours a day do give me opportunity to have quality time with myself. What I've done so far :

a) TALK TO ME : an activity where I'll be talking to myself. This is good as I'll be discussing

with ME (I'm not crazy ...yet) about things to do and what I've done

b) PUBLIC SPEAKING : In my line of work talking to people is very important. And I've used

the above quality time to improve the skill

I wish I could work from home or some where which located 2km from my house but for now the quality time seems to be working and probably I'll add some more thing activities in the future.

MY 20TH FUND

I've been toying with this idea for quiet a moon now without seriously implementing it. What is it all about ??? It's my version of contingency end of the month SOS saving.

For the past few years I've noticed that during the 20th day of every month which is 4 to 5 days to PAYDAY the feeling of "I'M SHORT OF RM SUPPLY" is so obvious even a 10 cents looks very important (i'm serious niiii).

So what I've planned with my other half is to start this 2oth FUND where each of us will contribute (for a start RM 100 each) and that contribution will go straight into the fund and only to be used starting on the 20th day of the month ...

At least ...between 20th day to PAYDAY ..we'll have an extra of RM 200. That's better that nothing ...much much better.

To my surprise the warehouse is just a merely 20 x 40 shop lot ....and about 20 plus people were there before me. But the best thing was it's FLAT RATE ...Hard Cover at RM 2 and Soft Cover at RM 1.

With a budget of RM 200 ...I went back after one and a half hours book hunting with 100 soft-cover and 50 hard-cover non-fiction books. Well that's being frugal at it best ....

MOVING TO A NEW OFFICE ....

Finally, my new office is completed and I'm now ready to move in. The good news is .. it's new , clean and less number of people (about 7 of us). However the bad news is even better. It's next to the CEO's office ...I repeat ..the CEO's office.

I hope with the new changes ...working spirit will be much better than the previous....Also hoping that the new team member could click well and working environment will be at its best.
